Aluminum wiring
Aluminum branch wiring was used in many homes built in the mid-1960s to the 1970s. The wire itself isn't usually the problem. Trouble starts at the connections, where aluminum can loosen and overheat over time when it's joined to devices that aren't rated for it.
Repairs start from $65 per device, using outlets and switches rated for aluminum or approved connectors to join a short copper lead. This is often what insurers and home inspectors want to see.
Warning signs
- Outlet or switch cover plates that feel warm
- Flickering lights or outlets that work on and off
- A burning plastic smell near an outlet or switch
- Discoloured cover plates
Knob-and-tube wiring
Knob-and-tube is the original wiring in many homes built before the 1950s, common in older neighbourhoods. It has no ground wire, the insulation can be brittle after decades, and it was never meant to be buried in attic insulation.
A knob-and-tube inspection with a written report is $179. The report tells you what's still live and what's been replaced, which helps when you're dealing with insurance or buying a home.
